What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is a synthetic Deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
What can Kybella® help treat?
Kybella® is used as an injection in the submental “double chin” region to dissolve fat away and improve the overall contour of the neck and jawline. Traditional methods to treat excess fat in the neck and under the chin require liposuction and/or a neck lift. Not all patients are candidates for Kybella® and safe surgical procedures performed by Dr. Grant still may be necessary.
Who is the ideal patient for Kybella®?
Patients with fat deposits and fullness underneath the chin are great candidates for having Kybella®. Patients who have a lot of loose and hanging skin (“turkey neck”) are not good candidates for this procedure, because Kybella® is not intended to remove skin. However, patients who have this problem may be candidates to have a neck lift procedure by Dr. Grant. Also, if you suffer from bleeding problems or already have difficulty swallowing, you may not be a good candidate for Kybella®. Dr. Grant will consult with every patient and will thoroughly review your medical history to see if Kybella® or any procedure is right for you.
How many treatments will I need?
Patients receive multiple Kybella® injections in a single treatment. Most patients generally require 3-4 treatment sessions about one month apart to see their optimal results.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects of Kybella® include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area which typically resolve within 48-72hrs.
Is Kybella® permanent or is it temporary like Botox® and Fillers?
Kybella® is a permanent fat dissolving solution to a heavy neck/jawline, however fat deposits can come back to treated area if weight gain occurs.
What is the downtime after the injection?
Most individuals have slight discomfort for a short-term period of time after the injection. This resolves relatively quickly. Patients experience different degrees of swelling, but it is a normal part of the healing process. Though you will likely still have swelling under the chin, most patients are comfortable returning to work with a day or two.
How long does it take to see results?
Your results depend on the amount of excess fat you have under your chin. Most patients begin seeing results 3-4 weeks post injection.
