Is a Facelift Right for You?

Dr. Jonathan Grant, M.D., F.A.C.S., a Dual Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon in Mt. Vernon, Washington, performs facelift surgeries to help improve and give you a more refreshed-looking you. If you have ever wondered whether a facelift may help you accomplish your anti-aging goals, this post is for you. Here, Dr. Grant reveals some of the signs that you could benefit from a facelift.

You want to look younger and more energetic.

A facelift is designed to help create more youthful contours by removing excess skin, repositioning displaced fat and lifting the underlying facial soft tissues. If you would like a more refreshed version of yourself, a facelift may be a great option for you.

You have deepening folds around your nose and mouth.

If you have deep folds or creases between your nose and the corners of your mouth, you may already be treating them with facial fillers; however, these products provide only temporary results. A facelift, which involves tightening lax skin and repositioning fat to fill out the folds and creases, can give you more dramatic and longer-lasting improvement than facial fillers.

You have loose, saggy skin on your jawline and neck.

Most facelift procedures include improvement of the jowl and neck area. During surgery, loose, saggy skin along the jawline and on the neck is tightened to create more definition in the lower face. This may be helpful if you feel uncomfortable or anxious of a double chin or “turkey neck.”

Signs a Facelift Is NOT for You

  • You are bothered by a drooping brow line and wrinkles on your forehead. A Facelift primarily focuses on the middle and lower areas of the face. You may be a better candidate for a brow lift, which concentrates on lifting the brows and smoothing the forehead skin.
  • You are bothered by drooping or sagging skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids. A facelift doesn’t improve eyelid skin laxity. Eyelid surgery may be a better option to refresh the eye area.
  • You have a few wrinkles but generally good skin tone. You might be able to minimize minor signs of aging with non-surgical means, such as Botox® or dermal filler injections, skin peels or laser resurfacing treatments.
  • You expect instant results. It can take several months to see the final results of a facelift, and up to a full year for surgical scarring to mature. If you are wanting a faster transformation, a facelift is probably not the best option for you.

Every patient’s needs and goals are unique. It’s important to sit down with a qualified facial plastic surgeon to discuss what you would like to achieve and plan the most suitable course of treatment.
